Though the MCU might be in a bit of a low point currently, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe remains one of the most impressive projects in the film space thanks to its interconnected and evolving storyline. Interestingly, it seems Disney had similar plans for the gaming space, with a writer now revealing that there was at one point going to be a Marvel Gaming Universe.
As part of The Fourth Curtain podcast, screenwriter and author Alex Irvine revealed that Disney had at one point planned to create a connect MGU – though it was ultimately scrapped – stating:
“When I first started working on Marvel games there was this idea that they were going to create like a Marvel gaming universe that was going to exist in the same way that the MCU [does] and it never really happened.”
Adding to this, podcast host Alex Seropian revealed “When I was at Disney, that was my initiative, ‘Hey, let’s tie these games together.’ It was pre-MCU, but it didn’t get funded.”
Though this of course never came to fruition, Irvine did offer a glimpse at some of the ideas they had, saying: “I was coming out of ARGs at that point and thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we had some ARG aspects?’ There would be a place where players could go that all the games touched, and we could move them back and forth from game to game. We could link in comics, we could loop in anything, we could do original stuff. And then, as Alex said, it didn’t get funded.”
Given the ever-increasing complexity and time required to make video games, it would have been significantly harder to create an MGU when compared to its film counterparts. And who knows, had this initiative proceeded, we may never have gotten the likes of Insomniac’s Spider-Man.
