Surprise Mario Kart 8 update finally lets you customise items

After years of no updates, Nintendo in a surprising move announced earlier this year that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would be receiving multiple waves of DLC, bringing 48 additional tracks to the game. Alongside these courses, Nintendo has also been bringing quality-of-life improvements to the game – with players now finally able to customise which items appear during races.

One of Mario Kart’s unique selling points is the fact that alongside racing, players can engage with one another through the acquisition and use of power-up items available on each track. For years however, players had little input regarding what items are available for use, with there only existing 3 options: All Items, Frantic Items, or No Items.

In a surprising update, Nintendo announced that “A new Custom Items feature is now available for all #MarioKart 8 Deluxe owners via a free update. Use it to choose which items appear in offline VS Races and certain online modes!”

That is not all however, as in team-based races you can even customise which items appear on a per-team basis, meaning the possibility for creative match-ups has been infinitely expanded upon.

While such a feature would have been nice to have at the game’s launch, the extra tracks, alongside this added customisability, has given Mario Kart 8 Deluxe a major boost to its longevity.
