Square Enix plans to bring more games to Xbox following FFXIV

Years after it was initially announced, Square Enix and Microsoft have finally revealed that Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Xbox consoles some time next year during the Spring Season. During the same FanFest event, the publisher also claimed that following FFXIV, more Square Enix titles are planned to be coming to Xbox.

Historically, PlayStation and Square Enix have had a strong relationship, with many of the latter’s games being developed exclusively for Sony’s consoles.  Some of the most recent examples include Final Fantasy VII Remake, FF XVI and Forspoken.

During the recent Final Fantasy XIV FanFest however, Square Enix’s CEO Takashi Kiryu confirmed that not only will FFXIV make its way to Xbox, but so too will a bunch of other games, saying (as transcribed by the Final Fantasy focused publication Nova Crystallis):

“As CEO of Square Enix, we want to continue to deliver fabulous games to fans across the globe. We want to welcome the Xbox community as well. Starting with today's announcement and whenever possible we are planning to bring our games to Xbox for players to enjoy.”

Adding to this, head of Xbox Phil Spencer said “We look forward to building on the relationship that brought FFXIV to Xbox and partnering with Square Enix on future games” – with XIV’s director Naoki Yoshida concluding by claiming that “We are committed to working with Xbox going forward.”

As mentioned, while many Square Enix titles do find their way to Xbox, a majority of the publisher’s biggest titles in recent years have been PlayStation console exclusives. Just some of these games which have yet to make their way to Microsoft’s console include: Final Fantasy VII Remake and its upcoming sequel; Foamstars; Star Ocean: The Second Story R; Octopath Traveler II; Forspoken, Live A Live; and of course Final Fantasy XVI. It will be interesting to see which games ultimately find their way onto Xbox platforms – and just how long it will take to do so.
