Shinji Mikami teases return to game development after leaving Tango Gameworks

Back in February of this year it was announced that Shinji Mikami – the founder of The Evil Within and Hi-Fi Rush studio Tango Gameworks – would be leaving the company. Since then, we have heard very little regarding the creator’s future plans. It seems as though this was due to a non-compete clause preventing him from doing so. Now, this period has officially ended, with Mikami teasing his return to the industry.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, Mikami said “Now that I've broken the spell of non-competition on myself, I guess I should get to work.”

For the uninitiated, non-compete clauses are relatively common in the video games industry, with another big creator – Hideki Kamiya of PlatinumGames – recently revealing that he too is under a similar situation for the next year following his departure from the studio a couple weeks ago.

Prior to his departure from Tango Gameworks, Mikami claimed he wished to direct one final game before retiring, That said, with him having taken a lengthy period of leave, it will be interesting to see whether plans have changed, and what he is set to work on next.

Hopefully this year-long break has rejuvenated the creator, giving him enough juice to work on new and creative ideas. Maybe he’ll even join forces with Hideki Kamiya once his own non-competition period ends? We will have to wait and see.
