Sequel to Firewall: Zero Hour announced exclusively for PSVR2

We still do not have a launch date for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset. This has not stopped the console manufacturer from announcing a plethora of PSVR2 titles ahead of time however. The latest title announced to be coming exclusively to Sony’s headset is a sequel to 2018’s VR first-person shooter ‘Firewall: Zero Hour’.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Sony officially unveiled Firewall Ultra, a sequel to 2018’s PSVR-exclusive first-person shooter. Discussing the upcoming title, Frank Marm, the community manager for game studio First Contact Entertainment, said:

“Firewall Ultra is the next evolution in the Firewall franchise. We’re taking advantage of the new features that the PS VR2 has to offer, and we’re excited to give you a sneak peek into how we’ve used some of those features for Firewall Ultra.”

Being a PSVR2 title, First Contact Entertainment have confirmed that Firewall Ultra will be greatly improved across all fronts, saying:

“Since PS VR2 offers a much higher level of visual fidelity with 4K HDR, we’ve completely remade all character models. The maps have also seen a complete overhaul, with new areas and new textures. There will also be new locations and contractors, but it wouldn’t be a Firewall game without the weaponry and equipment, which also feature a much deeper level of customization.”

As expected, Firewall Ultra will take advantage of PSVR2’s unique features, including eye tracking, which “enables you to intuitively swap weapons and bring up HUD indicators through cameras built into the PS VR2 headset”. Though not confirmed, it is also safe to assume that the game will utilise the PSVR2 controllers’ improved haptics, as well as the DualSense-like adaptive trigger technology – making for a substantially more immersive experience.

On top of the technological improvements, Firewall Ultra will also offer a new PvE mode; refined PvP modes and perhaps most importantly: dedicated servers.

Firewall: Zero Hour was an ambitious game developed for substandard hardware, and so the experience suffered as a result. With all of these shackles being removed thanks to the PS5 and PSVR2, it will be interesting to see just how improved Firewall Ultra will be over its predecessor.
