SEGA and Universal are making a “Sonic Cinematic Universe”

2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie surpassed expectations both critically and commercially, causing a sequel to be greenlit with future plans put into motion. With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 set to come to cinemas on the 1st of April, the film’s producer unveiled plans for a Sonic cinematic universe.

The review embargo for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film has now been lifted, allowing media outlets to post their thoughts and feelings on the upcoming sequel to 2020’s surprise hit Sonic film.

Alongside these reviews, as reported by VGC Toby Ascher, one of the producers for both the first and second Sonic films revealed the studio’s future plans for Sonic and his friends, saying:

“We're creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world.”

The notion of a cinematic universe was popularised by the Marvel Cinematic Universe and had led to many other companies taking their respective IPs in a similar direction…to mixed results.

What Ascher means exactly when using the world ‘cinematic universe’ is unknown, but with both Tails and Knuckles being added into the upcoming sequel, the potential for solo films, spin-offs and more is certainly there (something we are already seeing with a Knuckles TV show). It will be interesting to see how the public responds to Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
