Sea of Thieves is coming to PlayStation and Switch according to insider

Sea of Thieves has proven to be one of Xbox’s most successful console exclusives. Launching all the way back in 2018, the game has gone from strength to strength, selling millions of copies on Steam alone and promising a decade’s worth of support from the team at Rare. With more than 30 million players already, Microsoft looks set to bring the multiplayer pirate adventure to rival systems.

As claimed by industry insider Jeff Grubb during his ‘Game Mess Mornings’ podcast, following recent reports that Microsoft was preparing to bring one of its console exclusives to other systems, Grubb offered a more concrete take on the leak, saying:

“Sea of Thieves, right–I'll say I've heard that is one that might be coming to other platforms. When I first started hearing these rumors, I was like, ‘Oh this is probably about Sea of Thieves, because I've heard that could come to Switch and PlayStation.' And maybe that might be the kind of thing where like, actually all of this stuff is happening, and Microsoft is kind of trying to rejigger its strategy.”

Sea of Thieves wouldn’t be the first Xbox exclusive to come to another system, with the side-scrolling metroidvania Ori and the Blind Forest – and its sequel – both arriving on the Switch eventually.

That said, if there was a game which would certainly benefit from being multiplatform, Sea of Thieves would be it due to its multiplayer-focus and Games as a Service model. Hopefully we hear official word on this soon.
