Scarlet / Violet becomes the best-selling Pokémon game of all time (in Japan)

Pokémon Scarlet/Violet is the latest entry in the long running monster catching series. While the most recent mainline release launched to a great deal of controversy – becoming the lowest rated Pokémon game of all time – it also managed to break a bunch of sales records. Adding one more feather in the game’s cap, Pokémon Scarlet / Violet is now the best-selling Pokémon game of all time in Japan.

As shared by the Japanese publication Famitsu (and translated by ResetEra user Smitch), Pokémon Scarlet / Violet has become “the highest-selling ‘Pokémon’ series game in Japan” with over 8.3 million copies sold in the region alone.

More interesting is the fact that this record was previously held by Pokémon Red and Green – the very first entry in the series which released almost 30 years ago at this point.

Scarlet Violet

The Pokémon series is in a curious position currently, as despite the fact that each successive game has seemingly received more and more criticism, they have also sold more and more copies than ever before, and so those who were hoping to see the series evolve or change in any major ways might be disappointed.

Globally however, Scarlet / Violet still has a ways to go to supersede the gen-1 games, with the former selling a total of 25.69 million copies – compared to the latter’s 47.52 million units.

Still, the unyielding sales success of the Pokémon series is interesting to see, for better and for worse.
