Octopath Traveler II officially surpasses 1 million copies sold

2018’s Octopath Traveler served as the first game by Square Enix to adopt their new HD-2D style, creating classic-feeling JRPGs which use modern technology to blend pixel art with current-gen lighting and effects. Since then we have seen many titles adopt the HD-2D style, including the recently released Octopath Traveler II. Just 4 months following its initial launch, the sequel has now officially sold over 1 million copies.

Making the announcement via Twitter, the official Octopath account said “We are proud to announce that the worldwide shipments of #OctopathTraveler II have surpassed 1,000,000 units! Thank you very much! The commemorative illustration was created by Mr. Urushibara of the art team and was inspired by a certain party chat. We look forward to your continued support of the ‘Octopath Traveler’ series!”

For comparison’s sake, the first Octopath Traveler sold 1 million copies within its first month. That said, the popularity of the first entry surprised even Square Enix themselves, with the publisher apologising at the time due to a lack of available physical copies. Since then, Octopath 1 has gone on to sell over 3 million copies.

Though Octopath Traveler II appears to be having a slower start when compared to its predecessor, 1 million copies is nothing to sniff at. What’s more, it's entirely possible that the sequel will exhibit longer legs than that of the first game. We will have to wait and see.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Octopath Traveler II? How does it compare to the first game? Will the sequel outsell the original? Let us know down below.
