Next COD from Sledgehammer Games planned for 2027

Ever since they helped Infinity Ward with the development of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 all the way back in 2011, Sledgehammer Games have been positioned as the 3rd main development studio for the highly popular franchise – having been the lead dev for entries including Advanced Warfare, WWII and COD Vanguard. As part of a company restructuring, it was revealed that Sledgehammer’s next game is slated for 2027.

As reported by Insider-Gaming, as part of Microsoft’s recent spree of lay-offs affecting almost 2000 employees, Sledgehammer Games were greatly impacted, losing almost a 3rd of their entire workforce. What’s more, the studio’s main office in California is being shut down, with devs moving to a work from home structure until the end of 2024.

In the past, Sledgehammer Games have gotten the short end of the stick from Activision, with many of their games being developed under strict timelines – historically leading to a less than stellar reception. Such was the case with the most recent Modern Warfare 3, with Sledgehammer being tasked with developing the game’s multiplayer.

Fortunately, despite all the chaos surrounding the studio currently, the team will hopefully have plenty of time to work on their next game, as according to the report, Sledgehammer Games’ next title is planned to release in 2027. If this is the case, then it will have been 4 years since MW3 and 6 entire years since their last game as primary developer (2021’s COD Vanguard).

Despite the common consensus, Sledgehammer Games has a great deal of potential and talent, but has been mostly hampered by Activision Blizzard’s antics. Hopefully their 2027 title proves that given time, Sledgehammer can produce a truly excellent game. We will have to wait and see.
