Late last month, a surprising report was released claiming that – following the success of the PlayStation Portal remote play accessory – Sony is once again interested in developing a dedicated portable console. Since the initial report, more insiders claim to have heard similar statements; suggesting that the dream for a new PSP might one day actually become a reality.
Following the initial report from Bloomberg which stated that Sony is “in the early stages of developing a portable console that would play its PlayStation 5 games on the move,” more insiders have now corroborated the claims.
During the most recent episode of DF Direct Weekly, the team at Digital Foundry confirmed that they have heard similar reports of a dedicated PlayStation handheld from multiple sources – suggesting that the device is more than just a pipe dream.
According to Digital Foundry, “we actually heard about this handheld some months ago from a couple sources specifically. So, we're not in the business of leaking things but it's interesting that this finally sort of started to make its rounds because it just sort of confirmed what we had seen and heard off the record about this existing which is cool.”
While the device was said to be in its early stages of development, the fact that Digital Foundry heard of the device from multiple sources seems to suggest that Sony is most likely intending for this handheld to be a real device – and not just some internal prototype which will never see the light of day. We will have to wait and see, but here’s to hoping.
