Microsoft might bring ads to Xbox Game Pass through cheaper tier

Many have claimed that Xbox Game Pass is the best deal in gaming (including the company itself), and while that may be the case, for some, coughing up £10.99 every month is too much. For those, Microsoft may be set to introduce a new cheaper ad-supported tier, thanks to a new survey.

As reported by WindowsCentral, Microsoft has sent a survey to some Xbox owners asking for their thoughts and opinions on a hypothetical cheaper tier of Xbox Game Pass. Currently, Game Pass Ultimate will set you back £10.99 a month and includes the full Game Pass library across both PC and console, as well Xbox Live Gold – meaning online support for Xbox consoles.

This cheaper tier will reportedly cost just $3 a month but will come with some major limitations, including first-party titles no longer dropping day-one on Game Pass – instead being available to play 6 months later.

Additionally, this tier will supposedly include ads, appearing prior to the launch of a game – though it is currently unclear exactly how this would work. Finally, it seems this tier would also prevent you from using the service’s online and mobile Cloud streaming – being a download-only affair.

While there are certainly many compromises with this potential new tier, it would undoubtedly serve many players – both casual and hardcore – perfectly as long as they are patient. It will be interesting to see whether this additional tier comes to fruition.
