Meta Connect VR showcase announced for October

Meta/Facebook is one of the biggest players in the virtual reality market, both due to its highly successful Quest 2 VR headset as well as the company’s continued investment into the technology. In just over a month, the company will be hosting its annual Meta Connect showcase, where the company will “[explore] the building of the metaverse and the future of augmented and virtual reality.”

Meta has updated its ‘Meta Connect’ website, announcing that this year’s event will take place on the 11th of October 2022, where “Industry leaders will share the latest technologies and developer sessions will cover how to use them,” with the company’s stated goal being “to bring the world closer together and deepen human connection through new experiences.”

Alongside this, Mark Zuccerberg released a teaser image on Facebook, giving us a look at a new headset likely to be officially announced at the event. From previous leaks and rumours, it is suggested that this headset will not be the Quest 3, but will instead be a business-focused device – with the Quest 3 said to not be making an appearance until 2023.

While there may not be gaming-specific hardware, we can expect a number of VR game announcements to be made at the event. Last year, it was confirmed that the Quest 2 would be receiving a VR version of GTA: San Andreas. Since then, we have heard little from this title, and so hopefully this upcoming showcase will give us our first look at the game – as well as other as-of-yet-unannounced titles.

Meta stated that “more information and speaker details [are] coming soon” and so hopefully we learn more about what to expect over the coming month.
