Media Molecule appears to be working on an open world game with foraging mechanics

Of PlayStation’s many different first-party studios, Media Molecule is perhaps the most unique, with the team having released new, creative and experimental projects including LittleBigPlanet and most recently Dreams. While nothing is known officially regarding what the team is working on next, a new online listing seems to suggest that it could feature open world elements.

As reported by the publication mp1st, a CV published online by the senior environment designer at Media Molecule offers some interesting details on what to expect from the studio next.

According to the post, the dev’s duties included “Level blocking out main POls, moment-to-moment gameplay, forage design, and scripting various gameplay events”. Additionally, they also served as the “main contact/vision holder of various open-world content.”

Media Molecule Open world

For the uninitiated, while Media Molecule’s games do include their own internally-developed campaign of sorts, the primary function of LittleBigPlanet and Dreams were to serve as creation tools for users to have fun with.

Based on previous comments from Mm’s ex-studio head, it seems the team are learning more into offering a curated experience with their next game compared to their previous work. While having an open world does not necessarily mean that this new IP will be free from user-generated content, it’s clear that whatever they are working on will be quite different from their past output.
