GT7 update adds Sony’s Sophy AI as rival racer for limited time

Gran Turismo 7 is getting a huge update today bringing support for PlayStation VR2; adding new cars and more. In a surprising last-minute reveal, Polyphony Digital announced that the update will include Sony’s recently-shown off ‘Sophy’ AI, bringing it into the game and letting you compete against what might be the future of racing games – though only for a limited time.

Late last year Sony, in partnership with Polyphony Digital, announced Sophy: A “revolutionary superhuman racing AI racing agent”. At the time, no release date for the technology was given, with some thinking the tech could be a long ways away from being released to the public. It was therefore a welcome surprise when Polyphony Digital announced that today’s update will include a new mode allowing you to go up against the AI, saying:

“Gran Turismo Sophy Race Together” mode gives Gran Turismo players of all levels and abilities the opportunity to go head-to-head against GT Sophy in GT7. The special mode…is a first look at GT Sophy in GT7 and is designed to maximize the fun and excitement of racing against GT Sophy for everyone. Player feedback on this initial special feature will be used to continually improve the GT Sophy Race Together mode feature for future releases.”

While a welcome surprise for Sophy to already be coming to GT7, it is worth noting that for now, this will be a time-limited feature – available from now until the end of March. Additionally, Sophy is exclusive to PlayStation 5, though this isn’t too unexpected. While video games have always had some rudimentary form of AI, it cannot quite compare to what Sony is attempting here, and so it will be interesting to see how Sophy performs – and whether similar AI is set to be implemented into a bunch of future games.
