GAME UK is ending even more of its services

Just last week, we reported on the unfortunate news that the leading UK video games retailer ‘GAME UK’ would no longer be accepting in-store pre-orders in what was the latest in a long string of downsizing strategies. It seems the retailer is set to further dismantle itself piece-by-piece, with the latest seeing an end to all in-store sales of physical currency cards.

As reported by EuroGamer, the next step in GAME UK’s plans following its acquisition by the Frasers Group is to cease the selling of physical POSA (Point of Sale Activated) cards within the next few weeks – aka PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and Steam Store credit.

Interestingly, customers will still be able to purchase such credit through digital codes which can be printed on receipts at the store, but the physical cards themselves (which includes pre-determined currencies) will no longer be offered.

As mentioned, this is just the latest in a long string of moves by Game following its acquisition – including but not limited to the ending of its Reward program and trade-in services; closure of many of its physical stores; the ceasing of in-store pre-orders; and of course now the changes being made to digital currency cards.

Though the long-term plans for GAME UK are unknown, it seems clear that the retailer is unfortunately going to have a decreasingly relevant role in the UK’s video games market.
