Game Awards winner Sea of Stars surpasses 4 million players

Sea of Stars is an indie RPG from Sabotage Studio – the team that brought you 2018’s excellent retro action-platformer The Messenger. Launching to near-universal acclaim, the studio has now revealed that over 4 million people have played Sea of Stars since its launch back in August.

Making the announcement via Twitter – and expanded via a press release – the game’s official account shared that “Sea of Stars has been played by over 4 million people across all platforms and subscription catalogs in less than 4 months.”

It is worth noting that Sea of Stars is currently available across both Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus Extra – meaning that 4 million players does not equate to 4 million copies sold. That said, considering the fact that the game sold 250,000 copies in its first week, actual sales are likely to be just as impressive.

Speaking on the success of the game, Sea of Stars director and co-founder of Sabotage Studio ‘Thierry Boulanger’ said “Sea of Stars is the game of my dreams, and seeing its quest resonate so strongly with players and critics means the world to everyone at Sabotage.”

They continued, “The team behind this game is the most talented and dedicated group I could have ever hoped to create Sea of Stars with, and I’m again reminded of their brilliance as we progress with creating Sea of Stars’ upcoming DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker. For fans to have recognized our adventure in such an incredibly prosperous year for RPGs alongside new arrivals from the genre’s biggest franchises … we simply just cannot thank you enough for supporting us, and we can’t wait to show you what’s next for Sea of Stars.”

With Sea of Stars having recently won the Game Award for ‘Best independent game’ it will be interesting to see how many more players hop in over the coming months.
