With each passing generation, we’ve seen an increase in the budgets allocated for various games – in particular in the AAA space. With titles consistently costing over $200 million to develop, ex-Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price has now weighed in on the matter.
In an interview conducted by Game File (paywalled) and collated by mp1st, the recently departed CEO of Insomniac Games Ted Price was asked about the consistent ballooning of video game projects (such as Insomniac’s own Spider-Man 2 costing over $300 million). In response, Price stated:
“I think it’s like every challenge that we have faced at Insomniac for the last 31 years. And that is: There are solutions. The question always is: How creative are we willing to get to solve those problems?”
Price continued, “And a lot of the time it’s just, first of all, identifying the problem very clearly and asking: ‘Why does it cost this much to make a game? What specifically are we doing that inflates the cost? Is it the way we make decisions? Is it the way we set up our production pipelines? Is it the scope of our games?”
Price concluded with: “It often is a very complex answer, but we and every development studio need to – like we do – commit to take the time to unravel that, so that we can find real answers, versus just waving our hands and saying, ‘It’s just going to keep going up.’ That’s not reasonable. And the last thing I’ll say about this is: We love solving problems. This is what we tend to do, probably like most developers, and we are engaged by that opportunity.”
While perhaps not the most comprehensive answer, it does seem to suggest that the team at Insomniac aren’t too concerned with these rising costs. That said, considering Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales managed to sell over 33 million copies by 2022, Insomniac Is one of PlayStation’s studios which can seemingly almost guarantee a return on investment. Hopefully more studios do find creative solutions to these inflating budgets.
