EA reportedly working on a free-to-play Battle Royale Battlefield

Yesterday we spoke on the shake ups happening over at EA, with the Battlefield franchise trying to recover after the relative failure of 2021’s Battlefield 2042. According to a new report, the series looks set to be going back to its roots somewhat with its next title – though will also include a free-to-play Battle Royale mode.

As reported by Insider-Gaming, the next Battlefield title – which will seemingly arrive in October 2025 – is said to be taking inspiration from its earlier titles, seeing 64-player matches; a return of the classic class system and possibly the series’ “most realistic destruction effects” ever.

Interestingly however, EA appears to also be hedging its bets somewhat, with Insider-Gaming claiming that a free-to-play Battle Royale is also in the works.

Set to coincide with the ‘premium’ releases, this BR mode will be taking a page out of Call of Duty’s highly-successful Warzone book.

The Battlefield series has released a couple BR-like experiences in the past – though always as a part of the paid titles. It will be interesting to see whether Battlefield manages to mirror the success of its direct competitor with a free-to-play offering. We will have to wait and see.
