Cyberpunk 2077 will get a Game of the Year Edition

It is not uncommon for video games to release a Game of the Year Edition featuring all of a game’s DLC and possibly a little more. That being said, publishers have in the past been quite liberal with the use of the term ‘Game of the Year’ Edition. The latest game set to receive a GOTY edition is surprisingly Cyberpunk 2077.

Following its release in late 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 was met with a great deal of controversy and as such was not in the running for Game of the Year at most publications. That being said, at least one website did award the then-unfinished game the prestigious GOTY award – that being IGN Japan.

Now, as reported by Stockwatch.pl (and translated by Insider-Gaming), Adam Kicinski – the CEO of CD Projekt – confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 would be receiving a Game of the Year Edition in 2023, saying:

“It's the natural order of things – it was the same with The Witcher, which after both expansions was finally released as a Game of the Year Edition and has been on the market that way ever since. The same can be expected in this case.”

Of course, one difference between Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 is the fact that the latter won over 250 Game of the Year Awards, while Cyberpunk has not. That being said, the term ‘Game of the Year Edition’ has over time simply become a synonym for ‘Complete Edition,’ ‘Definitive Edition’ or any other kind of package deal – though it still feels somewhat deceptive.
