Borderlands 4 won’t feature as much ‘toilet humour’

The Borderlands series has amassed a reputation over its many entries for engaging in a particular style of humour – toilet humour. While funny enough in moderation, many fans believe that Gearbox lent into this style a bit too much. Fortunately, Borderlands 4’s narrative director has confirmed that the upcoming entry will shift its tone of comedy.

Taking to Twitter, the narrative director for Borderlands 4 – Sam Winkler – responded to one fan who noted that the current trailers released for Borderlands 4 have featured a clear shift from the extremely lighthearted tone of the prior games.

According to Winkler they’re “Not at liberty to talk much about the content of BL4, but I remain firm in my criticism of BL3's overabundance of toilet humor.”

Explaining exactly what this means, Winkler continued, “I’m not gonna say there’s no toilets but if the word skibidi ships in the game under my watch I’m gonna cry real tears. Paul Tassi joked that we were gonna have a gun called Hawk 2A and a fellow dev asked me if it was real and I wanted to put my hand down the sink grinder.”

While pop culture references and toilet humour do have a place in comedy, many fans had started to tire of Borderlands’ schtick, and so it will be interesting to see how the team approaches this 4th title.
