90% of all game sales in the UK are now digital

Over the past couple years we have seen the adoption of digital games balloon into quickly becoming the leading way in which people choose to purchase the media. Over time the ratio has skewed further and further towards digital – with a new report revealing that almost 90% of all game sales in the UK in 2022 were digital.

As reported by the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association – and shared by the BBC – 89.5% of all games sold in 2022 in the UK were digital, meaning just 10.5% of games were sold physically.

This is a major departure from just a few years ago, when the ratio was much closer to a 50-50 split. Going back even further will see digital media be nothing but a blip on the radar of gaming. As such, it is truly interesting to see just how quickly the industry has flipped on its head in this aspect.

It is worth noting that these results do include mobile gaming – which is essentially all-digital – and so contributes 30% to the figure. Still, there is no denying that physical media is becoming much less of a factor in gaming.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes for consoles to follow in the footsteps of the PC market, pretty much getting rid of physical media entirely.
