Borderlands film will be available digitally this week

Last week, various tracking sites began showing a late August release date for the Borderlands film on digital services, pointing to a quick abandonment of the film at Box Office due to low ticket sales. Now, this has been confirmed, with the film set to become available digitally on Friday.

The Borderlands film will be available via Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and other digital streaming services on the 30th of August. However, the film's distributor, Lionsgate, appears to be doing everything it can to encourage piracy, as the film will cost a staggering $20 to rent.

The Borderlands film has a star-studded cast, including big names like Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis. In all, the film is said to have cost around $130 million with marketing costs factored in, but it grossed less than $25 million in worldwide box office sales. At this point, there are also minimal daily showings of the film at cinemas here in the UK.

There is no word on the film landing on a on a streaming service like Netflix. For now, the film will only be available to purchase or rent digitally.

KitGuru Says: I understand that costs for renting tend to be higher shortly after a film's initial release in cinemas, but given how badly this film has been received, and how little interest the public has shown in it, I think these costs should be brought down drastically to at least try to sway Borderlands fans to give the film a go. This movie is unlikely to ever make its money back anyway.
