Kingston DataTraveler HyperX Predator 512GB Review

The Kingston DataTraveler HyperX Predator 512GB is breaking new ground for a high capacity performance oriented USB 3.0 flash drive. The sequential results are in the same zone as a last generation SATA 3Gbps Solid State Drive.

First impressions of the Kingston DataTraveler HyperX Predator 512GB are certainly impressive. Kingston haven't cut corners, including a well rounded bundle and all wrapped up in a high grade aluminum presentation tin. The USB 3.0 extension cable is also a welcome addition and useful for those people with their system underneath a desk or in an awkward to access location.

The unit itself is also finished in a very appealing aluminum chassis, which can be closed by simply pulling the two chassis blocks in opposite directions. The weight of the HyperX Predator 512GB is substantial, reinforcing the feeling that you have bought an premium product. It is larger than many USB 3.0 pen drives, but still small enough to easily fit inside a coat pocket.

Real world uses for this drive are definitely focused around business users who need to move large Photoshop or video files between home and work systems, or for corporations who need to keep large data files backed up, in an offline, secure location. For this audience, the HyperX Predator 512GB will be indispensable and an ideal size for a senior executive to keep many company records and important files secure.

For the home audience, this drive will be targeting the very wealthy enthusiast user. In the USA, the drive is priced just under the $900 mark at Amazon.com, and we were informed before going to press that UK retailers should be stocking the 512GB unit at around £720 inc vat. We have no ideas of pricing for the 1TB version, but you can expect to be paying a pretty penny for pride of ownership.

We can wholeheartedly recommend the HyperX Predator 512GB, it delivers extraordinary performance for a USB 3.0 drive and is clearly built to last. The very high pricing however will immediately exclude the majority of the enthusiast user base. It is worth pointing out that for the price of the Predator 512GB USB 3.0 drive alone, you could easily build an up to date AMD or Intel system.

Pros:

  • Excellent performance.
  • Beautifully presented.
  • We love the aluminum shell and locking design.
  • huge capacities for massive offline backups.

Cons:

  • It is hugely expensive.

Kitguru says: A very high performance USB 3.0 drive designed for business and demanding environments.

  1. Thats a crazy size. I thought my 32GB drive was big !

    The price however, holy crap!

  2. I love everything about this drive, except the pricing. I would love to know how many people would be wanting to spend almost $900 on a flash drive……….

been looking at their 64GB drive for a while now, seems an ideal price point.

  3. I would rather buy a USB 3.0 enclosure, self powered for a 480GB SSD drive. It would be faster and much cheaper…..

  4. So a external 500GB 3.0 harddrive cost $90. It also fits in the shirt pocket. I got to wonder what happens to the guy that buys this and then loses it.
