The Buffalo NAS software is an attractive interface, although it seems much less responsive than Synology's Diskmanager. It is also not multitasking capable, which is noticeable.
We moved through the interface to set up a shared folder and user account.
Setting up a shared folder takes a matter of minutes. There is around a 5-10 second pause between panels as the system sets up the folder. Again, this feels slightly sluggish when compared to the Synology counterpart, even with a lower end internal hardware configuration.
The networking options highlight our dual LAN cable configuration.
Setting up a user account takes only a minute and passwords and access can be configured (read/write).
Setting up port trunking only takes a few seconds and the software allows for various configurations to suit a variety of network situations.
We are using a Raid 6 configuration as shown above, and mapping the shared folder was painfree. As with most of the interface functions, there were delays of between 5 and 15 seconds depending on the task. By this stage I was becoming a little frustrated with the interface delays. Supported RAID levels are: 0, 1, 5, 6,10, 50, 51, 60, 61, Standard (JBOD).
There are other options for setting up various media servers and to restore all the settings to default, in case a problem occurs down the line. We found that most settings were catered for throughout the panels, although it is rather stripped down when compared against Synology's DiskManager software.
Synology have changed the game lately. I need to see some of the new QNAP products however, they are a great competitor for Synology.
Good looking NAS. I was eyeballing the DS212 from Synology for the price.
This seems faster than I would need, id be happy with 30 MB/s as my current nas is around 8MB/s sucks for copying MKVs over the network.
I saw this in our local store outside london and it is very well built. Performance looks good too.
Their software is way behind synologys as the review states, but it is still quite good for general users.
Good to see other reviews outside synology. I think the fact they fill this unit with hard drives is a very positive move. other companies need to do this, while charging the right prices for the drives.
8 1TB drives I would out to cost around £380 retail, so the nas itself is just under £1,000. I am not sure the pricing is good when compared against some competitors for the unit alone.
We have one of these in our work to handle file sharing for database documents between departments.
It works well but our IT guy said what was mirrored in this review. the software interface is dated and behind competitors.
