Apple’s AR/VR headset to be revealed in spring 2023, release this autumn

For Apple, 2023 will reportedly be quite low-key in terms of new product launches, but at least we might finally get an official announcement for the long-rumoured Apple AR/VR headset. According to Bloomberg, Apple's mixed reality headset will be revealed this spring, with the launch coming a few months later.

The report from Bloomberg paints 2023 as a somewhat slow year for Apple. Besides the usual updates to existing lineups, Apple will reportedly launch just a single new product, the long-awaited AR/VR headset. After many delays, it seems Apple is finally announcing it this spring, before WWDC 2023 in June, with availability expected in the autumn.

Based on early reports, Apple has already sent samples of this device to partners, allowing them to test them and develop third-party apps for the product. The device, which is believed to be named Reality Pro, will be based on an operating system internally called “Borealis”, but it will be publicly known as xrOS.

With Apple focusing on its AR/VR headset, staff have been reportedly moved from other product lines to help with the headset development, slowing down the release cycle of other Apple products. Still, the report mentions that we should get revisions to some of its lineups, including new MacBook Pros powered by M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, a high-end Mac Pro using the M2 Ultra, and possibly a 15-inch MacBook Air.

The iPad series is expected to remain untouched, with a slight chance that we'll see a spec upgrade on the iPad mini, iPad Air and entry-level iPad. The Apple Watch is also rumoured to see a performance bump, but nothing major. As for the bigger HomePod, it looks like it's still on track to come out this year. Lastly, the iPhone series will likely get the “15” update later this year.
