Sony on Concord’s failure: “you don’t know the result until you actually try it”

Concord’s release earlier this Summer marks perhaps the biggest flop in PlayStation history – with the live-service Hero Shooter being delisted in less than two weeks, and the devs (Firewalk Studios) being completely shut down shortly after. Sony has now officially commented on this most recent failure, claiming that “With regards to new IP, of course, you don't know the result until you actually try it.”

KitGuru Games: Concord Died because Hero Shooters are BORING

Concord marked the latest attempt by Sony to capitalise off of the hype and perceived popularity surrounding live-service games. Released on the 23rd of August, the Destiny x Overwatch like Hero Shooter lasted less than two weeks before being fully shut down by Sony – refunding all of the roughly 25,000 copies which were estimated to have sold during that time. In the immediacy following this monumental failure, there have been a variety of opinions on just why this game flopped so spectacularly. While certainly not the only reason, I believe that the primary cause of its failings is simple: Hero Shooters are boring.

PlayStation removes Concord from all stores, refunding customers

By now, it’s safe to say that PlayStation Studios’ live-service multiplayer hero shooter Concord is one of the biggest first-party failures in the platform’s history. Following abysmally low concurrent player counts and an estimated total sales of just 25,000 copies, Sony has been quick to respond – announcing the immediate ceasing of all sales alongside full refunds to everyone.
