Buffalo Terastation Duo TS-WXL Review

Buffalo sent us a serial code for NovaBACKUP Professional, software they will be including free with every Linkstation and Terastation device they sell. All new LinkStation and TeraStation products purchased from 21st June onwards are eligible for a free upgrade if the device did not contain NovaBACKUP. If you bought a unit before this date then Buffalo will supply a ‘competitive upgrade' to the relevant NovaBACKUP product.

The Linkstation family is bundled with 5 licenses of NovaBACKUP Professional and the Terastation family gets a 10 license  NovaBACKUP Business Essentials Software. Buffalo offer an option to purchase additional licenses via the maker, which cost £16.78 each. The program loads into the taskbar and remains here, even if the main desktop window is closed, this means that automated backups can still initiate without user intervention.

When the program is loaded it presents the user with a list of wizard based options and at the bottom the interface can be changed to ‘advanced' view.

Advanced mode takes each ‘simple' wizard option and splits it up into several categories offering finer control to the end user.

Disaster recovery is a helpful mode to create emergency disks and to run or create previously saved scripts. You can also verify a previous backup to ensure data has not corrupted.

The Business Essentials software package is supplied with an anti virus suite to verify data when it is transferred back and forward between devices. This is a fantastic touch offering an extra level of security.

There are many backup options on hand, and if you have created a shared folder and mapped the network drive to the machine you can also backup directly to the Buffalo Terastation here.

Backups can be set to be automated, with predefined folders and windows structures catered for by the simple click of a button, or if you wish, manual settings can be applied for specific folders and drives.

If you prefer online drive backups then Buffalo have a list of recommended partners and their pricing schemes. We had no problems using this software and it is a worthy addition to a NAS system as it can help take out many of the headaches associated with backing up important files.

  1. My friend bought this last week for work, and its very good, it can get a bit congested under a lot of accessing but the value for money factor is high.

  2. Seems like a good product, but I would like slightly more performance out of it, then again 2.0TB for just over 300 including the unit is very good value for money.

  3. I like Buffalo, they are big here, easy to buy, offer good support and are well priced. I agree they dont seem to be the fastest for NAS, but the price is too good to ignore.

Do they sell high end units to compete with QNAP?

  5. The 710+ Synology seems better, but its quite a bit more expensive. If you have two hard drives at home though it would be my first choice. its smaller too.

  6. Buffalo are often in PC WORLD here and they seem well priced, although ive noticed PCWORLD overcharge when you look online at prices. Good NAS systems, very well made.

  7. That 2.0TB seems well worth the £30 more.

  8. 2.0TB is a great price. I think the naked drives are just under £100, so its making the unit around £220. pretty good considering the PSU and motherboard etc.

  9. This is ideal for me, im not a guy who copies over massive files, but id like a backup system with software that seems good and that free addition of the backup software seems very good, its worth about £30-50

  10. very nice package and it looks like its built out of heavy duty metal, very good product. Shame about the performance, but the price is whats its all about at the end of the day.

  11. Their software is normally quite slow running, is this one any faster?

  12. Hazrig, yes the CPU in this one is much more responsive, its quite nippy. even formatting is faster
