Buffalo TeraStation TS3210DN 2-Bay NAS Review

Buffalo have been making business NAS units for years and in the differing TeraStation product lines they have a huge range of units ranging from desktop tower designs to full rack mounts.

The TeraStation TS3210DN is a solidly built no-nonsense business class NAS and while Buffalo say it can be used in the home office as well as small businesses, its lack of 3rd party apps mean that there are a lot better choices to be had for that scenario.

A NAS is only as good as its software and while the Buffalo OS lacks the graphical bling of many of its competitors it's quick and straightforward to setup. As the TeraStation TS3210DN is primarily aimed at business use, the lack of an icon-driven interface is perhaps not really that surprising although it might put some less experienced users off. On the other hand, the OS does offer two ways of getting accessing the NAS settings; Easy Admin for easy setting up of some features or Advanced for a more hands-on approach to tinkering with the settings.

During the formatting process, drives and arrays can be encrypted with 128-bit AES for added data security while the lock on the drive bay door adds a level of physical security.

The dual LAN connectivity provide failure protection should one go wrong or by using link aggregation to join the two ports together as well as delivering much higher data transfer speeds. One annoying aspect of the TeraStation TS3210DN's design is the lack of any front USB ports, the two that are provided are housed on the rear panel which could be frustrating if the NAS is placed on a shelf or in a cupboard. What makes this even more frustrating is that there appears to be enough room in the top half of the front bezel for at least one port.

We found the TeraStation available to order for £392.40 (inc VAT) at Misco HERE
