Asus EA-AC87 4×4 wireless bridge review

We tested the EA-AC87 in both access point and bridge modes, using the Mac software WiFi Perf. As a bridge, we used the Asus RT-AC87 with the aforementioned RT-AC87U in 4×4 wireless mode, to see the absolute best speeds we could squeeze from it. The test was run for 60-120 seconds, in both client-to-server and server-to-client modes.

In access point mode, we tested it just like a router, with a cable stretching from one Mac to our central location, then used a 2013 MacBook Pro to measure the speeds at 1m, 5m and 10m with direct line of sight, on both 5GHz 802.11n and 5GHz 802.11ac. The MacBook Pro only has a 3×3 antenna, and doesn’t support 600Mbps 802.11n, so it’s still not fully capable of pushing the EA-AC87 to its limits.

Here are the results

Bridge Mode (4×4 802.11ac)
bridge mode 1
bridge mode 2

Access Point Mode (5GHz 802.11n)
access point mode 1
access point mode 2

Access Point Mode (3×3 802.11ac)
access point mode 3x3 1
access point mode 3x3 2

These 802.11ac results are superb, with some record-breaking performance when used with the Asus RT-AC87U. Even 3×3 mode is particularly fast.

The client-to-server 5GHz 802.11n results aren’t quite as impressive, but the server-to client results are very good.
