Unreal Engine 4 can look stunningly real

While Benoît Dereau doesn't need to impress anyone in the gaming industry, having worked on the beautifully realised Dishonoured and developed some custom campaigns for Half Life 2 and Left 4 Dead, he has managed to wow a lot of people in the last 24 hours, by releasing one of the best looking Unreal Engine 4 demos yet. This one doesn't feature explosions or battling mechs though, instead it has him walking around an apartment. But that apartment is oh so real looking. This is one of those cases where squinting could easily fool you into thinking it was a picture from a fancy hotel website.

While Dereua did use some third party assets as part of the flat's construction and stresses in the video's description that “This is a personal project and no benefit is derived from this demonstration,” it's a pretty stunning example of what one person can do with a unique artistic eye and a development engine that can be had for just $20 (£13) a month.

The mirror shows no reflection, so quite clearly the protagonist in this flat adventure is a vampire

There is no real gameplay to behold here, with the flat merely showing off artistically what an environment is capable of looking like in Unreal Engine 4, but as a quick demonstration of one man's work, it's quite staggering.

  1. It looks really good but the Dolls House-like perception at certain stages is a little off. Regardless, its great.

  2. Absolutely astonishing!
