Microsoft wants to do TV achievements next

If we all drew one thing from Microsoft's Xbox One reveal, it's that it loves TV and wants you to watch it through your Xbox. Despite the fact that people are watching more and more content via streaming and on demand services than ever before, Microsoft is continuing to invest time and energy into furthering live TV viewing, by patenting the ability to create achievements, just for watching.

“Television viewing tends to be a passive experience for a viewer, without many opportunities for the viewer to engage or have interactive experiences with the presented content,” the parent application states. “To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content.”

Think about it guys, now you don't need to watch programs that you actually enjoy watching, while dealing with five minutes of adverts destroying all immersion every 20 minutes, but you can actually be told what to watch by Microsoft. It's a carrot more than a stick though, as you'll be given a digital pat on the back every time you watch something recommended by the guys that make Windows.

Cool right?

“Now let's all sit down and watch a nice marathon of Bing adverts”

Creepier still than Microsoft invading your home with these achievements, is the hint that the Kinect could get involved. How about requiring you to hold up a specific product during the show? Going to watch the latest huge football event? Show your support by holding a pack of an advertiser's crisps in-front of the camera and you could get an achievement.

KitGuru Says: The more I hear about the Xbox One, the less I want one. This is beyond redundant for the consumer. It's a tool for advertisers, nothing more.
