Games Workshop announces turn based 40k strategy game for PC and iOS

It's been quite a while since we had a chance to play a turn based game based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe but it won't be much longer. Today Games Workshop divulged more details about its upcoming title being developed by Slitherine for PC and iOS.

For the Warhammer aficionados out there, you'll no doubt recognise the setting of the game, due to take place during the climactic second war for Armageddon, where Ork Warboss Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka (to give his full title) brought his greenskin hoards down upon the desert world, facing off against Space Marines and Imperial Guard alike.

“It is very exciting to see a game like this come alive – I just can't wait to play it!”, said Iain McNeil, Development Director of the Slitherine Group. “It's been almost 15 years since a turn-based strategy game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe has been released and we think it is now time to deliver that experience to all fans around the world”.

As one Redditor points out, he's forgetting Squad Command and Glory in Death on handhelds, but PC wise, it's been a long time since Chaos Gate.

See that mechanical claw that's as big as the guy wielding it? That's why we love 40k

The game will feature 30 scenarios, spanning outlying desert wastelands through to the sprawling Hive Cities of the Imperium. Players will use the forces of Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Salamanders and Imperial Guard to stem the tide of Thraka's forces, in a hex grid, tun based game system.

Famous faces from humanity's last hope will also be present, including the brilliant Commander Dante and Commissar Yarrik. Veterans from each mission will carry over experience and equipment, letting them improve as you make your way through the story.

In total, there's said to be over 100 units, each with unique rolls and stats, morale effects, weather and terrain problems and bonuses and a branching, twisting plot throughout. There's going to be multiplayer too.

The game is set for release sometime in early 2014.

KitGuru Says: I may buy a tablet just for this. I hope can play as Orks in the multiplayer though. Always been a big fan of “da greenies.”

  1. PC and iOS…OK So Apple fans get it mobile but not desktop, and others get desktop but not mobile. This needs releasing to Android…the hardware is just as capable on most Android Devices.
