Microsoft hopes to appease Xbox One DRM haters

Let's face it, there's very few people that don't think the idea to make people pay full price licensing fees for games they borrow from friends for their Xbox One is a dumb idea. Everyone's talked about it, from consumers, to journalists, to analysts. No one wants it. Microsoft has apparently heard these cries of dismay and is doing something about it, but it's not revoking the idea just yet.

“We're fully aware of what is going on. I am also working on a few things to address it. I can't say much more right now. But we ARE listening,” a spokesperson said in a statement (via XWire). They went on to say that the Xbox One doesn't have to always be connected, though it would require some sort of regular connectivity. It's all very up in the air right now it seems.

Back pedalling a little on earlier statements, Microsoft has said however, that friends will be able to trade and borrow each other's games for a limited period, though chances are after a time, an activation fee would come in to play. Whether that fee will ultimately be the full price of the game, as has been already hinted at, it's not clear.

Chances are we'll be waiting until E3 to hear a better breakdown of how all this is going to work.

KitGuru Says: How about no activation fee at all? I wouldn't expect to have to pay full price for a second hand DVD, or sofa or car, how is this any different?

  1. Yes you wouldn’t be expected to pay full price for a physical object like a sofa or car because those items deteriorate in time. Software doesn’t and in most cases evolves and gets better over time. You won’t be expected to find more bugs in a second hand game you buy, quite the opposite. A person buying a game early on would experience more of the downsides of a newly released game then one that buys it a few months after release.

So because an old game is bug free we should pay more to play it. I am sorry your answer is so dumb it is unreal. No matter what game it is whether a triple A title or an indie game there should be no bugs in the game when we purchase it cause the developers have been given money and time to produce these games to the expectation of the gamers and there hype. Pay more money because it is bug free, i am sorry this statement you made is the ignorant voice of an xbox fan and not a gamer.

  3. it’s all fine saying pay full price for borrowed games from friends, but how about family’s like ours that have 3 xbox’s all with there own xbox live accounts, we share some games because there are way to easy to complete. so MS are going to loose out from house holds like our because we have all agreed that we will NOT BE BUYING the new xbox onecon and there might even be a reduction in the xbox live accounts.

Whats that Microsoft? PS4 it is then.

  5. what happens when microsoft still loses money even with this heavy handed drm? will these guys finally put the blame where it belongs?

  6. First of all let me say I don’t own a console, i’m a pc gamer and i am also a software developer and understand how this industry works. In enterprise environments having powerfull DRM’s is perfectly normal and whoever doesn’t want to use proprietary software goes open source. I know and understand that it’s annoying to have to buy a game for every family member, i never said it wasn’t flawed and i agree it needs to be improved. but also giving the opportunity for stores like gamestop to make a huge profit on used games and not pay anything to the developer is in my oppinion wrong. How would you like it for someone else to get a lot of money for your work just because they hang around as a middle man?

  7. It is just a stupid idea that my friend burrowed my game and he will have to pay full before playing…..well PS4 is always an option!
