Late last week Toshiba announced new additions to their Excite range of Android tablets. Two of them outperform the Retina iPad and rival the Nexus 10 in regards to display resolution.
The three new additions run Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and hit stores end of June (25th). Worldwide availability is said to be set for July 7th.
The Excite Pro and Write models both feature a native screen resolution of 2560×1600. They are powered by the Nvidia Tegra 4 Quad core processor. The Pure isn't quite as technologically advanced, with a lower screen resolution and Tegra 3 processor. It is obviously priced lower.
The Excite Pro has a 10.1 inch PixelPure IPS Display and features a pixel density of 300 ppi. Inside is 2GB of DDR3 memory and 32gb of internal storage, with a microSD card slot to add further storage if needed. The tablet also has Harman Kardon stereo speakers onboard which improve sound quality.
There is a 1.2 megapixel camera at the front for video conferencing and chatting and a 8 megapixel F2.2 camera at the back for high quality images. It also features image stabilisation technology to improve quality. There are micro HDMI and micro USB ports onboard. The model is hitting US retail with a price of $499.99.
The Excite Write is the top model. featuring similar specifications to the Pro, but the display is coated with Corning Gorilla Glass 2. There is also a TruPen digitizer for note taking and drawing (hence the ‘Write' name). There are 1,024 pressure points to improve the experience. The tablet also ships with a full version of ThinkFree Office Mobile for Android. It has a TruCapture application that uses the tablet's 8 megapixel camera to record content and convert into a snapshot for documents and presentations.
The US retail price of this model will be higher, at $599.99.
If these are too rich for your blood, then aim for the budget friendly PURE tablet. This model is 1280×800 capable with an AutoBrite display and has 1GB of DDR3 installed with 16GB of solid state storage, with a microSD card. It has a single 3 megapixel camera at the front, and none at the rear. It has micro HDMI and micro USB ports. Retail price of this model is much lower, at $299.99.
