Blizzard releases statement on recent WoW account hacks

We talked yesterday about the problems Blizzard was having with its World of Warcraft Mobile Armoury app causing account hacks and gold thievery, with only a couple of tweets from the publisher acknowledging it. Today though, Blizzard has come right out and said it: there's a lot of unauthorized account access going on.

“There’s been a recent increase in unauthorized World of Warcraft account-logins via our website and the World of Warcraft mobile armory app,” begins the statement. This account theft seems to be ocurring whether you have an authenticator or not, though Blizzard has suggested that those without one are more susceptible.

While a lot of people have got in touch with Blizzard to explain the problems they're having, some have not and Blizzard will be contacting them to let them know that there's some shenanigans afoot.

To help further combat the problem, the Mobile Armour has been suspended for now and if you put in a request with the support team, any strange item sales or any gold stolen from your account will be returned to you.

In a closing statement, Blizzard offered some advice to gamers: “While no means of account security is guaranteed, every precaution you take to secure your computer and your account—including changing your password periodically—adds another defensive barrier. We strongly encourage everyone to take a few moments to read through the security tips available on our support website and follow the suggestions posted there.”
