In a months time Yahoo will be releasing inactive email account names to new users. Accounts that have not been used for a year or longer will be ‘purged', releasing them for people to reclaim.
Yahoo say they will release the inactive accounts unless the current user logs in before July 15th. After this point the name will be cleaned from the database and available for claiming.
Yahoo have not said how many accounts this will affect, however a spokesperson said that a ‘number of ID's' will be freed.
The company are attempting to revive certain aspects of their operation, driven by CEO Marissa Mayer. People say that the company are experiencing a low, especially as GMAIL is dominant now as the free email of choice.
Mayer has been very active in her plans to reinvigorate the company. She has been responsible for the redesign of the Yahoo email service, home page and Flickr photo service since she arrived in July 2012. She also spearheaded the takeover of Tumblr, the popular blogging service, for $1.1 billion. The younger audience is exactly what Yahoo need, moving forward.
