Youtube have released details of their plan to let producers sell paid subscriptions to their videos. Youtube is owned by search engine giant Google and they said the subscription rates will range between 99 cents and $7.99 a month.
Early adopters are Sesame Workshop, the producer of Sesame Street. They will stream full episodes to paying subscribers. Ultimate Fighting Championship, the mixed martial arts league are also going to offer videos to fans.
Youtube have announced 30 of the initial partners already and said that other video makers will soon be able to set up their own paid channels, using the YouTube admin system.
Malik Ducard, the director of content partnerships for YouTube said “As we roll out wider and as we roll out self-serve, you’ll see a lot of innovation.” They expect many of the leading channels to move to a paid system soon, to start generating revenue. Youtube of course get a percentage of the sales, meaning they can generate a new revenue stream themselves.

It seems fair that they move to some other source of income considering adblock plus blocks their main source, I’d hate to see any of my favourite channels move to this scheme though. It’s not that I wouldn’t pay, most of the time I can’t so they’d be losing views and simultaneously that means losing business.
