Netflix reportedly trying to get Grand Theft Auto to bolster its game library

Netflix has been expanding its gaming efforts over the past year, offering everything from casual games to licensed games based on Netflix IP and even full-on console titles ported for mobile. Apparently, Netflix is setting its sights on even bigger properties and is reportedly trying to get the Grand Theft Auto games onto its service.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal (via gamedeveloper), Netflix appears to be wanting to add a great deal of cache to its gaming catalogue by adding a Grand Theft Auto game to the service.

Currently, it is unknown whether this would be a brand-new endeavour developed in partnership with Rockstar, or if it will simply be a port of the already-existing mobile entries (such as GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas).

It’s even possible that we might see GTA V brought over to mobile. Considering the fact that the game was released over 10 years ago and modern smartphones can now run a number of Triple-A titles, the concept of a mobile port of GTA V is not implausible – even if it is highly unlikely.

Regardless, getting a GTA game of any kind onto Netflix would undoubtedly boost the service’s catalogue and could shine a strong light on Netflix’s gaming ambitions. We will have to wait for official word before jumping to conclusions – but the prospect is interesting.
