Epic Games have struggled somewhat to gain a foothold in the PC gaming space, with their prior exclusivity program receiving criticism from Steam users and the like. That said, we are likely to see more games going Epic Games exclusive, as the company has now announced their latest “Epic First Run” program.
Making the announcement on their website, the team at Epic Games said “Today, we’re introducing the Epic First Run program: an opt-in exclusivity program for third-party developers on the Epic Games Store.”
What this means is that participants will be given the “opportunity to boost their net revenue from user spending on eligible products from 88% to 100% in their first six months on the Epic Games Store. After their six-month run, participants will continue to benefit from Epic’s 88%/12% revenue split.”
That is not all however, as those who opt-in will see their games “be presented to those users on-store with new exclusive badging, homepage placements, and dedicated collections. In addition, products will be featured in relevant store campaigns including sales, events, and editorial as applicable.”
While we have in the past seen Epic Games partner with varying studios for bespoke exclusivity agreements, it is interesting to see the Storefront offer a blanket exclusivity deal in such a manner – making the potential for more timed Epic Games Store exclusivity all the more likely.
