Sony is sending out emails to users across the world recommending that they change their passwords. Two members of staff at The Verge received these warning emails, which included the following statement from Sony:

“The Sony Entertainment Network team routinely monitors for any irregular activity, and if such activity is detected, we may sometimes reset passwords of affected accounts to protect consumers and their account information.” The email doesn't go in to more detail on what irregular activity it had found, it only gives instructions on how to re-create a new password: “Your account password was recently reset as part of this process and you will need to create a new password the next time you access your account using the ‘Forgot Your Password' option on the Sign in screen.”

The email ends with some tips on creating a strong password, encouraging users to make complex and unique passwords that haven't been used before on other services. Sony was targeted during a huge security assault back in 2011 which cost the company £250,000 as the attack did compromise the personal information of gamers using the PSN service. Similarly it also recently changed a load of PSN users' passwords, making the firm's security seems somewhat suspect.

Sony does seem to accept that big companies are always going to be targeted by cyber criminals though:

“Criminal attacks on electronic networks are a real and growing aspect of 21st century life and Sony continually works to strengthen our systems, building in multiple layers of defence and working to make our networks safe, secure and resilient.”

KitGuru Says: Considering the events that took place in 2011, I wouldn't be surprised if people were put off creating Sony accounts completely, we don't know what this new ‘irregular activity' is but just be careful with your information.
