The Firefox OS smartphone went on sale for £59.99 in the UK and $79.99 in the US, it was released on the website on Friday and sales were immediately impressive. By Monday both the US and UK eBay stores of ZTE, the Chinese company who manufactured the smartphone, had sold out.
The budget priced smartphone will now no longer be available until the next production run which has yet to be announced. The ‘Open' handset is unlocked and is a web based platform with the focus on maintaining a low price point. Users do not need to download and install applications either.
The Open has a 3.5 inch screen, 1 ghz processor, 512mb of integrated storage and a 3.2 megapixel camera.
Dr Li Gong, a vice president at Mozilla said “Mozilla is dedicated to moving the web forward as a platform for innovation and building products that people love. We are pleased that now we will put the full power of the web in even more people’s hands.
“With a great potential user base, we know that even more developers around the world will create their apps with new APIs to stimulate an inspiring new wave of innovation.”
The device is proving popular for those people with limited income. Whether it can make a mark and challenge iOS, Android and Microsoft operating systems remains to be seen.
