Nvidia Shield has a new release date

Nvidia's handheld streaming console, the Shield, was expected to debut at the end of June, but due to some minor delays it was put on hold with no real word of when it might be made available. Now though we know, and it's just over a week away.

The Shield will now be hitting shelves on the 31st July, priced at $300 (£196) in the US, though unfortunately no word on a UK release date as of yet.

“We want to thank you for your patience and for sticking with us through the shipment delay of your Shield,” reads a statement from the GPU manufacturer. “Our goal has always been to ship the perfect product, so we made sure we submitted Shield to the most rigorous mechanical testing and quality assurance standards in the industry.”

“We built Shield because we love playing games, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.”

Nvidia's Shield handheld drew attention earlier this year, when its streaming features were shown to be capable of handling games from local PCs, allowing you to take your game on the move – or to the toilet, if you're desperate to have uninterrupted gaming.

KitGuru Says: I reckon this console has a chance of making the biggest impact of the newly announced mini-consoles, like the Ouya and Gamer Stick. What do you guys think?

  1. Yes, this console will be popular mainly due to Android itself and in many ways the Tegra4 chip. The streaming capabilities of games from a PC is a real innovation that many cannot imagine until they use it. Portability in the house is always under estimated until the tablet arrived. Now the portable console will allow even more flexibility of play. Price point is good and if build quality is what it says, it will do very well indeed.
