*Just to clarify, I don't know any spoilers and therefore this news piece doesn't contain any.*
Sony has apologised to Rockstar and fans of the Grand Theft Auto series, since the preload for the upcoming game, downloaded from the European PlayStation store, allowed for the extraction of certain audio files, revealing major plot points.
The hackers behind the move did nothing illegal, simply preloading the game as many other fans had done to allow them to get started playing as soon as the release day ticked over. However, part of the game's encryption was cracked open, leading to many story elements appearing on sites like Youtube and GTA forums. Rockstar has been doing its best to have these taken down and has requested that sites do not reveal anything that could jeopardise the story.
Regardless of blame, Rockstar is not happy
Sony has also apologised to anyone that inadvertently had the game spoiled for them: “Regrettably, some people who downloaded the digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto 5 through the PlayStation Store in Europe were able to access certain GTA5 assets,” Sony Europe exec Nick Caplin said in a statement on the EU PlayStation blog (via Eurogamer).”We have since removed the digital pre-order file from the PlayStation Store in Europe. We sincerely apologise to Rockstar and GTA fans across the world who were exposed to the spoiler content. GTA5 is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year with a very passionate following, and we're looking forward to a historic launch on September 17.”
KitGuru Says: Really, it doesn't seem like Sony should be apologising here. It didn't do anything wrong. Hackers did as hackers do and broke the encryption. It's a shame, I'll give you that, but Sony's not at fault for providing a pre-load.
Well in the article it says that even normal uses had some “assets” available. Sony should definitely be apologizing because this IS NOT the first time they security has failed and thousands if not millions of people were affected. They need to boost security and save themselves a load of trouble
Why should sony apologise? It’s not down to them. If you dont want to know the storyline plot then dont search for it, it really is as simple as that. i cant wait for gta V to come out and i dont want to spoil the story for myself so guess what i am going to do? Thats right, not search and wait until it comes out. Jeez people…have a little self control and, while i have no love for sony, you can’t lay the blame at their feet just because they provided a digital preload.
Yeah Sony should be apologizing nothing wrong with allowing people to preload thats not the problem its the fact they preloaded it like weeks before the games release giving the hackers plenty of time to crack it
I think Sony did the right thing by apologizing to Rockstar and fans about the recent data leak of GTA V files from their servers. It’s the least that Sony could do given that they failed to protect access to GTA V files before the game was launched. However, I agree that it’s best not to check out the spoiler content. I would rather wait for the game to be officially launched and experience all the surprises that Rockstar has for us to the fullest.
