GTA is the biggest entertainment product ever

If you've been keeping even a lazy eye on the gaming press headlines for the past couple of weeks, you'll have noticed that GTA V has been kind of a big deal. It's been hyped, raised controversy, but most crucially for Rockstar and its publisher Take Two, it's sold a whole lot of copies. How many exactly? More than the first week sales of all other GTA games combined.

At least that's what Eurogamer is postulating, citing first day sales numbers of the game as almost 1.6 million in the UK alone, generating upwards of £65 million. It's already in the top few games ever sold and it's not even been on sale for a full seven days.

The previous top selling game in good ol' Blighty, was Call of Duty: Black Ops, which managed to move over a million copies in its first few days, but fell well short of GTA V's newest record.

While crime pays pretty well, making a video game pays far, far better

However, forget us for a second and look at the biggeer picture. Worldwide, GTA V has become the fastest selling entertainment product ever. Putting it ahead of all music and movies in history, by making over a billion dollars in just a few days.

‘Grand Theft Auto V, the critically acclaimed latest release from the iconic interactive entertainment series, has achieved worldwide retail sales of more than one billion dollars during its first three days on sale, according to company estimates,’ said Take Two Interactive.

While the game might have taken upwards of five years to develop and cost over £170 million to make, it's turned an enormous profit and shows that AAA blockbuster titles can still be successful – they just might need more than an impressive engine to get by on.

Kitguru Says: Impressive stuff, especially since I haven't thrown any money Rockstar's way yet. Still waiting for the PC version myself. What about you guys though? Which console did you pick it up for and are you liking it so far?

  1. So tempted to drop cash on the xbox version, but at the same time I really just want to wait for the PC version….. problem is i’ve got people at work telling me how awesome it is etc etc 🙁

  2. I’m a pc gamer myself but I couldn’t let this one wait any longer. I got it for xbox 360 and I’ve not been on my pc since last week. You’re really missing out of you’re prejudiced against consoles

  3. Bought it for Xbox 360 on midnight release, game is awesome. Will buy it on PC as soon as it comes out to play GTA Online with mates and hopefully be able to play with more than 30 FPS and poor shadows/textures/anti-aliasing.
