ASUS confirms that support was there all along for FX9000

While it seems that some mainboard vendors will need new models and/or BIOS updates in order to provide AMD FX9000 series processors with full support, KitGuru has been contacted by Asus to confirm that “Support has been there all along”. Nice to know they care, but what does it really mean?

Now that AMD has processors that want to play around the 5GHz mark at sensible money and support for all the new-fangled 2400MHz memory etc, any AMD lovers that want to get down and dirty with the OC will be wondering if their boards-n-BIOSes are up for it.

We had a quick chat with AMD marketing guru-ess Ellina ‘Tank Girl' Webb about compatibility and features. This is what she told us, “Existing ASUS 990FX-based motherboards all support the new flagship AMD FX-9000 Series processors at memory speeds up to 2400MHz with rock-solid stability — straight from the box, without a BIOS update”.

Good to know.

She then explained more, “The ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z, Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 and M5A99FX Pro R2.0 motherboards all feature AM3+ Socket with full support for AMD’s extreme-performance FX-9370 and FX-9590 processors. With eight-cores and unlocked clock speeds up to 5GHz, the FX-9000 Series requires incredible amounts of power and generates considerable heat, but ASUS 990FX motherboards take the FX-9000 Series in their stride”.

In simple terms, it seems that existing ASUS 990FX motherboards not only take the FX-9000 Series in their stride, straight from the box, but also aim to provide support rock-solid stability at memory speeds up to 2400MHz — something that currently cannot be attained by 990FX-based motherboards from other vendors. Nice.

But what's the view from AMD HQ?

Over to one of KitGuru's favourite VPs, Roy Taylor, “ASUS is a market leader in the motherboard industry, thanks to the quality and innovation of its products. The out-of-the-box support for AMD FX-9000 Series processors offered by its 990FX-based motherboards is further proof of the solid design and high-quality components for which ASUS has long been renowned. In fact it’s so good, I used the same motherboard in my PC at home”.

Given that Roy is AMD's Corporate Vice President of Global Channel Sales, we're guessing that he has enough spare cash to afford pretty much any mainboard he wants – so these AMD boards must be giving him the excitement and stability he needs to be happy at high click speeds.

KitGuru says: The only thing here that we're not sure about is the memory speed. When AMD has helped serious clockers achieve world records on memory speeds, then it's normally in the >4GHz zone. There are loads of memory kits out there which operate at 2,800MHz and above, so why isn't that part of the standard profile. Nope, we're not sure either, but we will ask on your behalf.
