A spiritual successor to City of Heroes is in the works

City of Heroes, after enjoying a long life as one of the industry's longest running 3D MMOs, was shut down last year along with its developer, Paragon studios. A lot of people didn't want to see it go and the community tried very hard to keep the game alive, but it just wasn't meant to be. That said, fans of the game may finally have something to look forward to in the form of a Kickstarter campaign just launched for City of Titans, a new super hero MMORPG.

Although City of Heroes was subscription based at first, it did eventually move to a free to play model. City of Titans will start off free to play with optional VIP subscriptions available with a micro-transaction shop.

Missing Worlds Media, the development group behind this new MMO is filled with City of Heroes fans aiming to “deliver a unique massively multiplayer online roleplaying game, created from the community of a lost universe, to build a new community for a new world.”

The Kickstarter is picking up steam, just a few hours after launching and at time of writing this it has 404 backers with $72,000 out of it's $320,000 goal. At its current pace the project will reach its goal in no time at all.

KitGuru Says: I played City of Heroes on a friend's account when it first came out, I loved it. I had just started to play it again when the shutdown was announced, $320,000 seems a bit low for a game that could end up being so big but we will see how it all plays out. I'd hate to see another good Kickstarter project crash and burn. Would you guys like to see a successor to City of Heroes?

  1. I prefer Heroes and Villains (heroes-and-villains.com) as a spiritual successor to CoH. It’s a lot farther along in development, with regular updates and a direction that’s more in line with the original game. That didn’t prevent me from pledging a bit of money towards City of Titans, but I’d pledge more to Heroes and Villains if they ever ask for it.
