Brian Cox says time travel is possible, to the future

Professor Brian Cox once made a cameo appearance in Doctor Who and he is due to give a scientific presentation to mark the 50th anniversary of the BBC one sci-fi show in London next week.

The hour long talk will be filmed at the Royal Institution and it is part of a series of programs to be shown ahead of a 75 minutes episode called ‘Day Of The Doctor' on November the 23rd.

He said that moving forward several thousand years in time would be possible, but getting back again would be a bigger issue. He spoke at the British Science Festival in Birmingham yesterday and said that the idea of building a tardis is not as far fetched as many people might think.

He said “The central question is, can you build a time machine? The answer is yes, you can go into the future. You've got almost total freedom of movement in the future.”If you go fast your clock runs slow relative to people who are still. As you approach the speed of light your clock runs so slow that you could come back 10,000 years in the future.”

Getting back in time however, or returning to the ‘present' would be more difficult. The theory of General Relativity does permit movement, it would require the person to find a ‘wormhole' – a shortcut in the fabric of space and time.

He added “Most physicist doubt it. Hawking came up with the ‘chronology protection conjecture' – physics we don't yet understand.”

  1. this is a great theory i lyk it

  2. A totally misuse of the Special Relativity Transformation!

Under existing technology, it is more promising to travel to future by putting yourself into Liquid Nitrogen and set the clock to defrozen after the time you want to go to…

Special Relativity does not provide any theory background for time travel – neither to the past nor to the future!
