Google announce new Haswell Chromebooks

Google have announced a new series of Chrome devices at the Intel Developer forum last week which will feature the latest Intel Haswell processors. The company highlighted some models from HP and Acer and they promoted the fact that Toshiba and Asus joined the Chromebook ranks.

The Google Chromebooks have proven popular to the audience who perform basic tasks, such as surfing, checking email and watching videos. With the latest Haswell processors at the heart of the new machines, battery life is reportedly increased by a significant margin.

Specifications from Google partners is still light on the ground, although Hewlett Packard did say their upcoming Chromebook14 will measure 345 x 238 x 20 mm and weigh 1.8 kg. The screen resolution is set at 1366×768. They say it can boot into the operating system within seven seconds and can run for 9.5 hours on a single battery charge. The device also has USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports with HDMI connectivity.

It comes with 16GB of included solid state storage and it has a memory card slot with 100GB of Google Drive cloud storage for two years, free of charge. Some models will ship with 200MB of monthly data allowance over T-Mobile's 4G mobile broadband network.

The new Acer Chromebook has an 11.6 inch display and can last for 8.5 hours on a single charge. It is thinner than the current models, only 19mm and weighs 1.25kg.
