Ubisoft is making a Watchdogs movie

I'm sure at this point we're all quite certain that Watchdogs is going to be badass. It's been hyped and teased well enough that it's going to be an early purchase for anyone that's a fan of open world games like GTA and similar. Ubisoft is pretty sure of this too, so much so that it's already teamed up with Sony and New Regency to produce a movie about it. Not necessarily about the game itself, but the game's universe.

“Since both Sony and Ubisoft have movie and videogame branches, this deal creates exceptional opportunities for us to merge the realms of the story-based cinematic experience with the interaction of the video game,” said Jean-Julien Baronnet, Ubisoft Motion Pictures' chief executive officer. “In addition, Sony Pictures and New Regency have deep production expertise and are letting us maintain a strong creative voice in the film’s development. Together, we’re confident we can deliver a movie that builds upon the excitement that the game is already generating.”

New Regency isn't the hottest prospect studio out there though, having made some real flops recently. The Internship springs to mind and looking at its website, it also put together Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and oh god, it did Jumper as well.

Not filling me with confidence here guys.

However, I will say this: the world is ready for a good hacking movie. Look over the past and you have such entertaining tripe as Swordfish, Hackers, The Net, they're all Bad/Good, or Good/Bad depending on your take on life. They're fun to watch, but nobody is under the impression that these are good films.

Maybe Watchdogs could be? It has an interesting premise, it's very topical with all the PRISM, NSA stuff going on and the game looks to treat hacking as this clever tool, instead of making it a big, animated… thing, like those other movies did.

Pictured: what all computers look like inside.

No word from anyone involved who might play the protagonist, or indeed any members of the recently announced DedSec hacker group (quite clearly borrowing at least a little bit of its persona from Anonymous) and presumably that's because we're in the very early stages of this movie's pre-development.

KitGuru Says: Before I spout off my obligatory Hackers line, let's get this out the way: what do you guys think of a Watchdogs movie? Could be an interesting anti-hero scenario. If this is big budget, my bet is on Matt Damon playing the lead or maybe a grittier looking Bradley Cooper.

Now, without further ado. Achem. “HACK THE PLANET.”
